CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist (2026)

A pre-trip inspection isn't busywork โ€” it's the law, and it's the difference between catching a bad tire in the yard and getting put out of service at a scale. Here's a practical, plain-English checklist.

Why the pre-trip matters

Under FMCSA rules a driver must be satisfied the truck is in safe operating condition before driving (49 CFR 392.7) and must review the most recent driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) if one was filed. Skipping the pre-trip is how defects you'll be blamed for ride out onto the highway. It also sets up your day: the items you check now are the same ones a roadside officer looks at first.

The checklist

Work the same route every time so you never skip a step. Most drivers go engine โ†’ cab โ†’ lights โ†’ walk-around โ†’ brakes.

1. Engine compartment (engine off)

2. In the cab (engine start)

3. Lights

4. Walk-around

5. Air brake check

On air-brake equipped vehicles, run the standard three-part check: make sure the low-air warning activates as pressure drops, that the spring (parking) brakes apply automatically at low pressure, and that air builds back up and holds without leaking down too fast. Follow the exact cut-in/cut-out and leak-down numbers in your CDL manual and the vehicle's spec โ€” they vary by truck.

Items that most often fail

Brakes, tires and lights lead roadside out-of-service violations year after year. If you're going to spend extra seconds anywhere, spend them on tread depth, air leaks and a lamp that's out. Fix small stuff in the yard โ€” it's free there and expensive on the shoulder.

Pre-trip vs. your DVIR

The pre-trip is the inspection you perform; the DVIR is the record. A post-trip DVIR is required when a defect is found (49 CFR 396.11), and the next driver must be able to see that any reported defect was repaired or certified as not needing repair before the truck rolls again.

How Eagleye keeps it simple

Eagleye ELD puts the DVIR right in the driver app: walk the checklist, flag a defect with a photo, and the report is logged, time-stamped and visible to the office instantly โ€” so repairs get tracked and your inspection history is ready if an officer asks. One less paper form to lose.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pre-trip inspection required by law?

Yes. Under FMCSA rules a driver must be satisfied the vehicle is in safe operating condition before driving (49 CFR 392.7), and must review the last driver vehicle inspection report if one exists. A post-trip DVIR is required under 396.11.

How long should a pre-trip inspection take?

A thorough pre-trip on a tractor-trailer usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. The CDL skills-test version is longer because you call out each item out loud for the examiner.

What is the air brake check?

A three-part test on air-brake vehicles: check the low-air warning activates, that the spring (parking) brakes apply when pressure drops, and that air builds back up and holds without excessive leak-down. Exact pressures follow your CDL manual and the vehicle spec.
